Answer engine optimization (AEO) tools, often called AEO trackers, are software platforms that track how often AI answer engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, cite or mention a brand. Some also score or produce content to earn more citations.
If you've looked in Google Search Console for proof of how you show up in AI answers, you've hit a limit. Google launched its Generative AI performance reports in Search Console on June 3, 2026, but they focus on impressions. John Mueller said Google tracks position for the AI feature as a single block rather than per link, so the report can't show where your citation sits.
This guide covers eight AEO tools and applies a strict filter: A tool must track citations or mentions inside answer engines as a core job, not as a bolted-on dashboard. Every tool claim comes from the vendor's own pages, checked in October 2026. The market statistics come from the sources linked in this guide.
Disclosure: Ten Speed created this blog. Ten Speed is an organic growth agency, not software, and it uses third-party visibility tools for client work. Every competing tool is represented using publicly available pricing and feature data confirmed in October 2026. Pricing and features change often, so check each company’s website for the most up-to-date information. For an independent cross-check, read through G2's Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) category.
Key takeaways
- Google Search Console reports AI impressions but not link-level position, a blind spot that dedicated AEO tools cover.
- Engine coverage varies widely: Some plans track one answer engine, while others track seven or more.
- Three of the eight entries, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, and Surfer, are AI modules inside broader SEO platforms.
- Some platforms pair tracking with content production, so check that the tracking half works on its own.
- Citation tracking shows how often a brand is mentioned. Explaining why a competitor is cited instead takes separate analysis.
Why does citation tracking need dedicated tools?
Native analytics can't tell you whether an AI answer cited you. Mueller confirmed that Search Console's AI report treats the AI feature as one block, and the report is a filtered view of data already in regular web reporting. A fixed keyword rank also can't describe a dynamic answer: Ahrefs notes that AI platforms are non-deterministic, so the same query can return different answers throughout the day.
Pew Research found users click a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appears, versus 15% without one. That shift is why AEO trackers exist as a separate category from rank trackers. For the data behind which pages get cited, see our study of what AI cites.
How did we choose these AEO tools?
We applied one filter, scored each tool the same way, and disclosed our position in the note above. The two subsections below cover the filter and the scoring.
What's the AEO-specific filter?
A tool had to run and report on citation or mention activity inside answer engines as its core function. We exclude general SEO suites unless their AI module clears that bar on its own, which is why Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking's AI Search Toolkit, and Surfer's AI Tracker appear. AirOps is included because its pricing page lists answer engine insights, competitor insights, and sentiment and theme analysis alongside content production. G2 files AEO and generative engine optimization (GEO) in one category, so this guide narrows the list by job. (Developer observability tools are covered in our LLM visibility software guide.)
How did we order and score them?
We ordered purpose-built trackers first, then the AirOps tracking-plus-production platform, then SEO-suite modules. The criteria were engine coverage, depth of citation tracking, pricing transparency, and whether content guidance is built in.
Published self-serve pricing counted as a plus for transparency, but custom pricing didn't count against a tool, since enterprise platforms serve a different buyer. Everything below was last verified on October 20, 2026, but pricing may change after publication.
1. Profound
Profound is an enterprise-focused platform for tracking brand visibility in answer engines. Its pricing page lists a free trial, which runs 50 prompts daily for seven days across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, and a custom Enterprise plan that tracks up to nine engines, including Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and Google AI Mode.
Enterprise adds single sign-on (SSO) with Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) support and System and Organization Controls 2 (SOC 2) compliance. For brands, the page lists the trial and Enterprise, and agencies have a separate self-serve plan.
2. Peec AI
Peec AI is a self-serve tracker built around visibility, position, and sentiment. Peec's plan page shows Starter (50 prompts), Pro (150), and Advanced (350) plans, each with daily tracking, unlimited users, and a choice of three models from ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini, and Naver AI.
Peec's AI instructions page currently lists those plans at $95, $245, and $495 a month. Perplexity is a paid add-on, and Claude is available only on the Enterprise plan, which covers up to 13 models and uses custom pricing. Advanced adds multi-country tracking and a Looker Studio connector, annual billing is 15% cheaper, and a free trial is offered. Peec separates brand mentions from source citations, which helps teams prioritize content.
3. Scrunch
Scrunch (acquired by Sitecore in June 2026) tracks AI visibility and pairs it with page audits. Scrunch's published plans list Starter at $250 a month billed annually ($300 month-to-month) and Growth at $417 a month billed annually ($500 month-to-month), plus an Enterprise tier with custom pricing and a seven-day Starter trial that needs no credit card.
Coverage spans ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, and Meta. Starter includes 350 prompts and five page audits.
4. Otterly AI
Otterly AI has the lowest published self-serve entry price in this list. Its pricing page lists Lite at $29 a month (15 prompts), Standard at $189 (100), and Premium at $489 (400), with 15% off annual billing. All plans track ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot daily. Claude, Google AI Mode, and Gemini are paid add-ons, with Claude costing $29 to $439 a month depending on the plan. A free trial is available.
Plans include link citation analysis and a GEO audit of pages, and Standard adds API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) access.
5. AirOps
AirOps combines AEO tracking with content production. AirOps' plan comparison lists answer engine insights, agent analytics, competitor insights, and sentiment and theme analysis. Solo is limited to ChatGPT insights, Pro covers seven or more answer engines, and Enterprise adds custom prompt and page limits, custom agent builds, and a dedicated account manager.
Plans also include task allotments for content workflows (35,000 on Solo, 100,000 on Pro). Solo and Pro both offer a free start, the page lists no dollar prices, and Enterprise runs through sales.
6. Ahrefs Brand Radar
Ahrefs Brand Radar is an AI module in an SEO platform that clears our filter as dedicated tracking. Ahrefs' Brand Radar page says it monitors brand mentions across six AI platforms (AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot), reports AI share of voice, and shows the cited pages behind answers, drawing on a database of more than 490 million monthly search-backed prompts. Custom prompts also support Claude.
Ahrefs' pricing page lists Brand Radar AI as a standalone tool from $199 a month and custom prompt packages from $50 a month, and the Lite, Standard, and Advanced plans include daily custom prompt allowances of 5, 10, and 20 prompts.
7. SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit
SE Ranking's AI Search Toolkit is an add-on within a rank-tracking platform. Its product page says it tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini by capturing responses as a real user would see them. It monitors brand mentions and links, compares up to five competitors, maps cited sources across seven markets and five languages, and exposes data through an API and MCP.
SE Ranking's help center prices the AI Search add-on at $89 a month for 200 checks, $179 for 450, and $345 for 1,000, with 20% off annual billing. One check covers one prompt on one AI platform, and the add-on requires a Core, Growth, or Enterprise plan. Core starts at $103.20 a month on annual billing. The add-on also includes access to SE Visible, a separate product that adds Perplexity coverage. A 14-day free trial of the platform is offered, and Claude isn't listed.
8. Surfer AI Tracker
Surfer's AI Tracker sits inside a content optimization platform. Its tracker page lists Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, and says it scrapes real answers instead of using APIs.
The AI Search Analytics plan costs $82 a month billed yearly and tracks 50 prompts daily across all five engines. The $99 Standard plan tracks ChatGPT only, with 25 prompts checked weekly. Pro is $182 for 50 prompts daily across five engines, and Peace of Mind is $299 for 100 prompts daily, all billed yearly.
How do engine coverage and pricing compare?
Engine coverage and pricing model separate these tools and decide whether one fits an existing stack or needs its own budget. Every tool covers ChatGPT at some tier, and most add Google AI Overviews, while Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini coverage varies. Several tools gate engines by plan.
Why won't tracking data alone win citations?
These tools report mention and citation rates, and a few add page audits or content production. Fixing why a brand isn't cited still takes structural and content changes, which is the execution layer Ten Speed provides through AI brand audits that show how models describe your brand relative to competitors, then content plans built around what the audit finds. Tracking and execution are two jobs, and most teams need both.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between AEO tools and GEO tools?
Mostly the label. G2 files AEO software, also called generative engine optimization (GEO) software, in one category with the same core features: AI visibility tracking, sentiment analysis, and competitor benchmarking.
Do I need a dedicated AEO tool if my company already uses SEO software?
Traditional rank trackers don't report whether a brand appears in a dynamically generated AI answer. Some SEO platforms now include AI modules, such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Ranking's AI Search Toolkit, and Surfer's AI Tracker, so compare your existing platform's AI coverage with a dedicated tool before buying one.
What metrics should I track to measure AEO success?
Track mention rate (the share of tracked prompts where an answer names your brand) and citation share (how often answers cite your pages as sources). Add share of voice against named competitors, and sentiment. Track these at the prompt level, since answers change between runs.
How long does it take to see meaningful data from an AEO tracker?
Because answers vary run to run, one day of data tells you little. Start with a baseline check across five to ten high-intent pages before changing copy, then compare weekly or monthly trends. Treat the first month as calibration, and judge a content change over a full quarter.
What should a team do if an AEO tool shows low citation rates?
A low rate shows that competitors are winning. The next step is an audit of how AI models describe your brand relative to competitors, followed by content and structure changes aimed at the weak spots. Ten Speed's AI Brand Audit covers that step.
